Task Force Releases Recommendations for Creating More Open Space in Somerville
Recommendations to be discussed at September 4 City Council Committee meeting
The City of Somerville Open Space Creation Task Force recently released a strategy memo with recommendations on new and innovative approaches for the creation of more open space in Somerville, the most densely populated city in New England. The 4.1 square mile city has been working to achieve its goal to create an additional 125 new acres of open space by 2030, with 105.1 acres left to go.

On June 27, 2019, the Somerville City Council passed a Tree Preservation Ordinance (Ord. #2019-15) with new requirements for the removal of trees on private property. The ordinance went into effect on August 1, 2019, and incorporates and updates the prior City of Somerville Tree Ordinance, which set requirements only for the removal of public trees.
Public Hearing on Final Land Transfer Needed for D2 Parcel Development in Union Square Tuesday, 9/10
The Somerville City Council Finance Committee of the Whole invites all interested community members to attend and speak at a Public Hearing on the Transfer of City-Owned Parcel, 82-D-1 in the North Prospect Block to the Somerville Redevelopment Authority (City Council Agenda Item #204755).
Joint Public Hearing on Proposed Zoning Ordinance Thursday, 9/19
The Somerville City Council Committee on Land Use, and the Somerville Planning Board, invite all interested community members to attend and speak at a joint Public Hearing on the adoption of a new Somerville Zoning Ordinance. The Hearing will take place on Thursday, September 19, at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 93 Highland Ave. The Land Use Committee of the Whole and the Planning Board will hear testimony on the proposed new ordinance. Written public comment will also be accepted as noted below.
Municipal Election: Tuesday, November 5; Last Day to Register or Update Voter Info Is Oct. 16
This fall, Somerville voters have the opportunity to cast ballots for Mayor, Ward City Councilor, City Councilors-at-Large, and School Committee members. A preliminary election for Mayor and Ward 3 School Committee, similar to a primary election, was held on Tuesday, September 10. Voters narrowed down the Mayoral candidates to two candidates (Joseph A. Curtatone and Marianne Walles) and the Ward 3 School Committee candidates to two candidates (Sarah Phillips and Mary Marshall). The general election will be on Tuesday, November 5.

Somerville’s New Bus Lanes Projected to Shorten More Than 8,000 Bus Trips per Day
Winter Hill in Motion Project Also Features Separated Bike Lanes for Cyclist Safety
As part of the City of Somerville’s Winter Hill in Motion project, new dedicated bus lanes, separated bike lanes, and more mobility upgrades are coming to Broadway. Work has already begun to install bright red “Bus Only” lanes along both sides of Broadway between McGrath Highway and Main Street, one of the city’s most congested commuting corridors. These dedicated travel lanes will enable the MBTA to provide more efficient, reliable bus service on routes 89 and 101, which support approximately 8,000 boardings per day.

Due to a meeting notice error, the Special Planning Board Meeting previously scheduled for Thursday, September 5, will be rescheduled.

The Hearing will take place on Wednesday, September 18, at 6 p.m., in the Somerville High School Auditorium (81 Highland Ave.).
