Statement of Duties

The Crime Analyst will be responsible for performing tactical, strategic and administrative analysis under the direction of the Senior Crime Analyst for the purpose of identifying and resolving crime patterns and trends, as well as to assist in general operations, planning and problem-solving. The Crime Analyst makes frequent use of records management, data management, and presentation software to conduct research and present their results.

Essential Functions:

  • Gather data daily from various sources including incident tracking software, regional bulletins and other reports
  • Analyze and disseminate criminal intelligence, detect crime trends and series, and identify suspect/crime relationships
  • Engage in ongoing analysis of crime trends and issues
  • Disseminate information through regular products (Crime Bulletin) and requested products
  • Support CompStat and criminal intelligence meetings by analyzing data and preparing slides
  • Assist the Criminal Investigations Division with ongoing cases
  • Manage established crime analysis databases and respond to requests for data by officers, Command Staff, City officials and the public
  • Use records-management, data management, and presentation software to conduct research and present results
  • Monitor NIBRS data and reports
  • Prepare statistical reports 
Requirements:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree and three to five (3-5) years’ experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Criminal Justice degree preferred.

Prior experience in Crime Analysis Unit or law enforcement setting preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

Knowledge: knowledge of best practices in statistical analysis.

Abilities: Ability to work with high-level decision makers; ability to analyze data and communicate findings orally and in writing to provide organizational intelligence.

Skills: Proficient skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and CAD/RMS systems required; preferred skills include basic familiarity with data management systems (Access) and GIS (ArcGIS).

Work Environment                                                                                                 

The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements.  Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.  Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments.

Physical Skills

Minimal physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as office equipment or photocopy paper (up to 30lbs.).

Motor Skills

Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, filing and sorting papers.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require constantly reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
