Junior Civil Engineer

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field investigations, inspections and document research as needed to support the planning, design, construction and operation of public infrastructure.
  • Manage and fulfill information requests for public infrastructure (water, sewer, drain, roadway, etc…)
  • Review and preparation of grants of location.
  • Review private development site plans specifications and the long-term reliability of utility, roadway and sidewalk infrastructure.
  • Administer the City’s permit program for all work conducted with the public right-of-way and excavations throughout the City.
  • Provide engineering and technical assistance to the Department of Public Works, Water Department, Sewer Department and other City departments as needed.
  • Provide support to senior Engineering Department staff in the management of consultants and contractors performing infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Apply understanding of water, sewer and drainage infrastructure, how it operates and how it is maintained.
  • Understand and interpret City Ordinances and Engineering Department policies.
  • Read and comprehend site plans and project specifications.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to respond to service requests, questions and concerns from constituents.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point, and other computer programs and portals such as Citizen Serve and Utility Cloud.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Must have at least two years of full time or equivalent part time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils, and materials or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

  1. Associates Degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. (education towards such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
  2. Bachelor’s or higher degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for the required experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license

Preferred:

  • Possession of a valid Engineer in Training Certificate
  • Licensed Soils Evaluator.

$49,793.64 per year plus benefits. Position is eligible for additional overtime work opportunities.
