Benjamin Brown School Schoolyard Renovation

Presentations

Renovation Background

The Benjamin G. Brown School is located in Ward 5 at 201 Willow Avenue and serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Built in 1900, the Brown School is the oldest elementary school in Somerville and does not have any interior recreation, physical education, cafeteria, or assembly spaces.

A community process for a new design for the Brown Schoolyard began in 2018 with the help of Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, broader-scale studies and planning for the long-term viability of all City and school buildings began. For the Brown School, required building renovations and additions would significantly encroach upon the current play area; therefore, planning for long-term schoolyard improvements is now integrated into that larger project.

In the near term, measures will be taken to address surface safety concerns in the schoolyard so that it may continue to be used year-round by students. Please continue to check back here for updates.
