Willow Avenue to Grove Street Sewer Infrastructure

The section of drainage pipe between Willow Avenue and Grove Street is in poor condition and causing localized collapses. Built in 1901, it is a 1,150 feet long section of 24-inch diameter pipe and is located between 25 and 300 feet from the north side of the Somerville Community Path, between Willow Avenue and Grove Street.  To prevent further problems such as additional collapses, sinkholes, and flooding, the City will be rehabilitating and/or replacing the City's sanitary, drain, and combined sewer system in the greater Davis Square area including this section of pipe along the Community Path.

On October 24th, 2019, $2,740,000 was approved for the design and construction of measures to address drainage in this area, The Engineering Division of IAM will be working with a design consultant to develop a new plan to address these issues. Design will begin in early 2020, with construction beginning as early as the Fall of 2020.

Project History

In 2017-2018, The City’s Engineering Division of IAM released a construction bid package directed to address these repairs. This project was shelved at the time due to funding and construction feasibility issues and did not move forward.
