LOCATION

Join us for the opening of FabVille, a publicly run Fabrication Laboratory or “Fab Lab” located in the Somerville High School. Similar to a makerspace, a Fab Lab is a facility with the purpose of bringing manufacturing to the masses and educating the public in digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D printing. Fab Labs grew out of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms’ “how to make almost anything” course and is now a global movement with Fab Labs all over the world.

Opening this fall, FabVille will be integrated into the Center for Career and Technical Education’s (CTE) regular academic programming, adding elements of prototyping and digital fabrication to the many career tracks at the CTE. After the school day FabVille will be open to entrepreneurs and artists looking to work on individual projects, non-profits seeking to run educational programming, and Somerville residents of all ages and skill levels who wish to learn something new. Think of it as a public “labrary”!

This open house will include a welcome by Mayor Joe Curtatone, Superintendent Mary Skipper, and Secretary of Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Jay Ash. Also included will be tours, snacks, and information on how take advantage of this facility.

Entrances are located at the atrium of the high school (the building closest to the Central Library) and from the parking lot off Medford Street, behind the building. FabVille is in the basement of the Center for Career and Technical Education in the former autobody shop.
