Join the Mystic River Watershed Association at the Mystic Lakes in Medford and learn about the amazing Alewife and Blueback river herring.

Do you know they migrate hundreds of miles from salt to freshwater to return to where they were born? Despite being the most urban river in New England, the Mystic River hosts the largest river herring migration in Massachusetts with as many as 630,000 adults and billions of eggs produced in the lake each year.

See the fish ladder in action and find out about video monitoring. Discover how we test for water quality. See some surprising live aquatic organisms. Meet the scientists studying the fish. Be a citizen scientist, come help count the fish!

Family friendly & appropriate for ages 6 and up. Dress for the weather – rain or shine we will be outside much of the time.
