Mayor Ballantyne & Councilor McLaughlin invite you to cut the ribbon at ESCA Park.

This park is dedicated to the East Somerville Committee Action (ESCA) group in recognition of their persistent activism during the construction of Interstate 93. ESCA was composed of East Somerville neighbors who organized as a community to speak out against the federal highway expansion project in the late 1960s. ESCA advocated to reduce the effects of car and noise pollution by locating I-93 underground, for neighboring buildings to receive double-paned windows and central air conditioning, and for new trees to be planted. More powerful entities blocked many of their demands, but ESCA’s determination and conviction had other lasting impacts. Their advocacy planted the seeds for future, positive, community-driven change across our city.

The renovation of this land in to ESCA Park was completed through a public-private partnership between the City of Somerville and Young Construction with the Eastside Place Condominium Project and features dense tree plantings to help clean pollutants from the air so that the park can be better enjoyed by all.

The public is WELCOME!
