PROGRAM:
Leoš Janáček - Moravian Dances for piano solo
Gideon Klein - String Trio
Antonín Dvořák - Piano Quartet No.1 in D Major

PERFORMERS:
Marji Gere, violin
Jenn Chang, viola
Adrienne Taylor, cello
Dan Sedgwick, piano

Let's spend an afternoon exploring the music of three Czech composers with distinct voices and life stories:

• Leoš Janáček, the prickly and obsessive composer whose collections of folk songs, everyday conversations, animal calls—and romantic misadventures—served as prime source materials for his operas, chamber music, and vocal works.

• Gideon Klein, the young Jewish Moravian pianist, composer, and cultural worker whose powers of expression knew no bounds, flourishing despite censorship, deportation, and imprisonment until his murder at Auschwitz.

• Antonín Dvořák, a Bohemian who scraped together a living as a teacher, violist, and organist—and composed lyrical, heartfelt music during stolen moments at his roommate’s piano—until his career was launched by an illustrious fan and supporter, Johannes Brahms.

This program will be a vivid patchwork of music in contrasting shapes, sizes, colors, patterns, and textures. If we performers do our jobs right, each composer’s unique voice will ring out ardent and clear. We also hope to bring to light a common thread: their shared love of the folk song and dance traditions of Bohemia and Moravia.
