LOCATION

On Wednesday, July 1, 2015, Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack, city officials, and youth leaders of the Youth Affordabili(T) Coalition (YAC) will be celebrating the launch of the MBTA Youth Pass pilot program in the Dudley Square Bus Station. Following a ribbon cutting, young people will lead the ceremonial first tap of the new Youth Pass.

What: Youth Pass Ribbon Cutting
When: Wednesday, July 1, 2015, 1:00 to 1:30 p.m.
Where: Dudley Station, Roxbury
Who:
  • Youth Affordabili(T) Coalition
  • Youth Pass participants and parents
  • Stephanie Pollack, Secretary of Transportation & MBTA officials
  • Gary Christenson, Mayor of Malden
  • Joseph Curtatone, Mayor of Somerville
  • Gloria Fox, State Representative
  • Anthony Thomas, Office of Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz
  • Felix Arroyo, Boston Chief of Health & Human Services
  • Representatives from the Boston Department of Youth Engagement & Employment
  • Gladys Vega, Executive Director, Chelsea Collaborative
Why: Since 2007, Boston-area youth have organized for a Youth Pass in order to address the affordability crisis for young people on the MBTA. We found that nearly one-third of youth are priced out of the T, which prevents access to opportunities like school, jobs, healthcare and extracurricular activities. In 2014, the Youth Affordabili(T) Coalition, which has led the campaign, partnered with MassDOT to develop and launch the Youth Pass. The pilot covers 1,500 youth ages 12 to 21 in Boston, Chelsea, Malden and Somerville, and will be administered by those four municipalities during the inaugural year. Participants can choose between a $7 weekly or $26 monthly pass during the span of the program, from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016.
