Following a ribbon cutting, young people will lead the ceremonial first tap of the new Youth Pass.

| Why: | Since 2007, Boston-area youth have organized for a Youth Pass in order to address the affordability crisis for young people on the MBTA. We found that nearly one-third of youth are priced out of the T, which prevents access to opportunities like school, jobs, healthcare and extracurricular activities. In 2014, the Youth Affordabili(T) Coalition, which has led the campaign, partnered with MassDOT to develop and launch the Youth Pass. The pilot covers 1,500 youth ages 12 to 21 in Boston, Chelsea, Malden and Somerville, and will be administered by those four municipalities during the inaugural year. Participants can choose between a $7 weekly or $26 monthly pass during the span of the program, from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. |
