Important Information for Property Owners Regarding Expansion Tanks
- Any and all expansion tanks should be installed by a licensed plumber and properly inspected and permitted to prevent any potential issues.
If you are planning to add an expansion tank, please follow the proper installation requirements as noted below to prevent any inadvertent impacts to water monitoring reporting.
Expansion Tank Installation Steps
- Step 1: Engage a licensed plumber.
- Step 2: Apply for a permit via somervillema.gov/citizenserve.
- Step 3: Have plumber complete installation.
- Step 4: Have plumber coordinate inspection.
If you installed an expansion tank without following the above steps:
- Please contact a licensed plumber to review your installation.
- Add a check valve if needed.
- Complete inspection.

- Leaks: It is the responsibility of the homeowner to prevent and repair leaks. You can monitor your water usage via WaterScope. Please email customerservice@massinstallation.com to register for a free account following your water meter replacement.
