Somerville Earns Top Honors as Certified Climate Leader Community

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne is honored to announce that the City of Somerville has been officially named a Certified Climate Leader Community by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER), joining an inaugural group of 19 municipalities recognized for bold climate action.

This top-tier designation honors Somerville’s leadership in clean energy and climate resilience, and unlocks new access to state grant funding for future sustainability projects.

The Climate Leader designation is awarded to municipalities that demonstrate measurable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to clean energy, and integrating climate resilience into local planning. Somerville earned this distinction through its continued implementation of the City’s comprehensive Climate Forward plan.

The announcement coincides with SustainaVille Week, Somerville’s annual celebration of local climate action, and Mayor Ballantyne’s recent announcement of several key climate policy updates. This includes a proposed ordinance unanimously advanced by the City Council’s Open Space, Environment, and Energy Committee, to nearly double the Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change’s (CEUCC) size and expand representation to include youth and Somerville Public Schools.
