Join Historic Preservation Commission for Tours of Milk Row Cemetery, Prospect Hill Tower

The Somerville Historic Preservation Commission (SHPC) and Historic Somerville announces its annual Docent Tours of historic sites in Somerville. For the first time, the series will also include Docent-led tours of the old Powder House, located between Ball Square and Teele Square. Tours are also available at the Milk Row Cemetery on Somerville Ave., and for the Prospect Hill Tower. Tours will be held as follows:

How to Fix the World Festival Set for Sun, June 18 in Union Square

The How To Fix The World Festival brings together art and activism to consider ways we can improve our communities and the larger world. The FREE event will be presented by the Somerville Arts Council in the city’s Union Square from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 18 (rain date: July 8).

Celebrate Somerville’s 175th Flag Day at the Site of the Nation’s First Flag Raising

Two events honoring the Grand Union Flag and Somerville’s history planned for June 17

SOMERVILLE – Did you know?  Recent research by historian Byron DeLear has discovered that the Grand Union Flag, first flown atop Somerville’s Prospect Hill in 1776, was not just the first flag of the united colonies, but the first flag of the United States?  Join the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission and Historic Somerville on Saturday, June 17 to hear DeLear present his findings about the Grand Union Flag and Somerville’s role in the Revolutionary War era.

Winter Hill Schoolyard Construction Set to Begin June 21

Construction for phase one of the Winter Hill Schoolyard project is scheduled to begin on the Thurston St. level on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. The first phase involves transferring the asphalt court on the lower level into a turf playing field.

Community Meeting to Discuss Beacon Street Project, June 26

Please join Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston, the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development, MassDOT and Beacon St. Reconstruction Project staff on Monday, June 26, for a community meeting to discuss the ongoing roadway reconstruction. Alderman Heuston and project staff will provide important updates, including information on current construction, information about the protected bicycle track, impacts to and mitigation for residents and businesses, and an updated project timeline.

Residents Invited to Participate in Union Square Neighborhood Council

With the recent passing of Union Square Zoning, the redevelopment transition in the Union Square neighborhood is taking off. A neighborhood council is forming to influence the transformation and help shape the future of Union Square, and neighborhood residents and business owners are invited to participate.
 
Join the Union Square Neighborhood Council for a community meeting on either Wednesday, June 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. or Saturday, June 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., both at the Argenziano School, 290 Washington St.

Prospect Hill Park Walking Tour for Upcoming Renovations, July 6

Please join Ward 3 Alderman Robert McWatters, and the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development, for a community walk to discuss upcoming renovations to Prospect Hill Park. The walk will be held on Thursday, July 6, at 6 p.m. Residents will also have the opportunity to visit and climb to the top of the Prospect Hill Tower, now open to the public during scheduled times thanks to recent renovations funded by the Community Preservation Act.

Member Sought for Somerville Community Preservation Committee

Committee to identify funding priorities for ~$2 million per year in affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space projects.

Do you have a passion for affordable housing, historic preservation, and parks and open space? The City of Somerville wants your help and is now accepting applications for one public position on the Community Preservation Committee, which oversees the selection of projects to be recommended for funding by an estimated $2 million in annual Community Preservation Act (CPA) revenues. Residents are encouraged to apply and applications must be submitted by August 3, 2017.
