Somerville Styrofoam Recycling Event September 9, at DPW

The City of Somerville’s Styrofoam Recycling program will return for all Somerville residents on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Residents may visit the Department of Public Works yard, located at 1 Franey Rd., between 9 a.m. and noon to dispose of all types of EPS (Styrofoam) foam packing materials, including foam bracing and packing peanuts. IMPORTANT NOTE: materials must be placed in bags before placing it in the recycling container. A second Styrofoam recycling event is tentatively planned for September 2017, however please call 311 for additional information in the fall.

Somerville’s Annual Domestic Violence Vigil to be Held Oct. 4th

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Somerville Commission for Women, and RESPOND announce the annual Candlelight Vigil in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 4, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Statue Park in Davis Square.
 
The vigil is an annual event bringing the community together in remembrance of those who have lost their lives over the last year to domestic violence.

Ward 2 Meeting to Discuss Mobility and Safety on Sep. 25

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston invite all interested community members to a neighborhood meeting to discuss mobility and safety issues in the Inman Square and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 25, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Argenziano School, 290 Washington St. With several active construction projects underway in the area, the goal of this meeting is to discuss large-scale traffic challenges and potential mitigation strategies.

City's Bond Rating Rises Yet Again in Strong Report from Moody's

Somerville’s bond rating continues its streak of upgrades; Rises to highest ever rating based on City’s strong financial practices, growing economy, healthy reserve levels, diverse tax base, manageable current and projected debt levels

SOMERVILLE – Moody’s has raised the City of Somerville’s bond rating from the City’s highest ever rating, Aa2, to a new high of Aa1, the second highest rating on the agency’s scale and one step from the Aaa rating. In its report, the bond rating agency cited the City’s healthy financial position, strong financial practices, conservative budget management, robust and growing economy, diverse tax base, and healthy reserves.

“Inclusion Drives Innovation,” a Celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Planned for October 24

The Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities invites all community members to its annual event in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, on Tuesday, October 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event, “Inclusion Drives Innovation,” will take place on at the Highlander Café at Somerville High School (atrium entrance), and will feature visual art, poetry, music, and a panel discussion led by Colleen Flanagan, Executive Director of Disability Action for America and Adriana Malozzi, Founder and CEO of Puffin.

New Somerville Policy First in MA to Add Controls, Require Public Transparency for Surveillance Technology

Executive order balances privacy and civil liberty protections with police investigative and public safety needs; Requires new approval, operational, and public notification protocols

SOMERVILLE – As surveillance technology use grows nationally, the City of Somerville has joined 19 U.S. cities and two states working with the ACLU to protect individual rights while preserving public safety. On Oct. 4, with the full support of the Somerville Police Department, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone signed the Executive Policy on Surveillance Technology, which is believed to be the first such policy implemented in the Commonwealth.

SOMERVILLE – It is with extreme sadness that we announce the death of our brother, Officer Louis Remigio. On Monday night, October 9, Officer Remigio succumbed to injuries sustained while involved in a motor vehicle accident on I-95 in North Hampton, New Hampshire, on Sunday, October 8.
