New Somerville Program to Make Lesser-Known Heating/Cooling Option More Affordable

HeatSmart/CoolSmart program includes discounts on climate-friendly alternative that can lower utility costs

SOMERVILLE – A new City of Somerville program will offer homeowners and local businesses discounts on an alternative heating and cooling technology that can operate more cheaply and efficiently than some traditional systems. For a limited time (through Dec. 15), the HeatSmart/CoolSmart program will provide discounts on the installation of what are known as “air source heat pumps,” which can both heat and cool homes at lower usage costs than oil and electric heating systems and window air conditioning units.

Cedar St.-Summer St. Intersection to Close for 1 Month (Daytime Only) as Part of Cedar St. Water Infrastructure Upgrade

Intersection will be closed between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. through August 30. Detour routes include Porter St. and Cherry St.

Beginning as soon as Wednesday, August 16, work related to the ongoing Cedar Street Water & Sewer Upgrade Project will progress into the intersection of Cedar St. and Summer St., requiring the closure of the intersection to through traffic for approximately one month (during working hours only).

Somerville Climate Forward to Review Studies at Upcoming Meetings on August 16 and 21

Join your fellow Somervillians in addressing our city’s impact on climate change. At upcoming community meetings, the City of Somerville’s Somerville Climate Forward initiative will take a deeper look at the studies and data that we’ll be using to develop a citywide plan climate change. The initiative, led by the Office of Sustainability and Environment, is working toward setting goals for both reducing the city’s carbon footprint as well as preparing for the local impacts of climate change.

Somerville Community Preservation Committee Opens Application Round for FY18 CPA Funds

$2.3 million available for historic resources and open space/recreation land projects

SOMERVILLE – Application materials for this year’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds as well as the FY18 Community Preservation Plan, which sets the funding allocations and priorities for the year, are now available.

Up to $2.3 million is available for projects that preserve Somerville’s historic resources and expand and improve our parks and recreation land, including $710,000 earmarked for open space acquisition. The City invites residents, organizations, and businesses to submit eligibility determination forms to see if they qualify for the funding.

City Awards $1.3 Million in CPA Funds to Open Space and Historic Resources

Upon the recommendation of the Somerville Community Preservation Committee, the Board of Aldermen approved more than $1.3 million in Community Preservation Act funding for 12 open space and historic preservation projects. This follows the previously approved recommendation to provide $880,416 to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund in January. The funded projects will bring improvements to historic treasures in Somerville, including the Milk Row Cemetery and the Grace Baptist Church.

Residents Invited to Share Feedback Regarding Community Preservation Committee Applicants

The Community Preservation Committee is made up of Somerville residents who set the priorities for approximately $2 million in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds each year and recommend which projects should be funded to the Board of Aldermen. A general public seat is opening on the committee on January 1, 2018, and Somervillians are invited to share feedback on the applicants’ qualifications, which can be found at www.somervillema.gov/CPA.

Somerville Community Preservation Committee Celebrates 5th Anniversary of Community Preservation Act

Residents invited to join the Committee for a walking tour and community celebration on September 9.

Somerville’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) is turning 5! To celebrate, the Somerville Community Preservation Committee is hosting a walking tour and community celebration on Saturday, September 9. All residents are invited to attend and partake in the day’s festivities.

Annual 9/11 Vigil Walk Scheduled in Somerville

The City's annual vigil walk, in honor of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, will be held on Monday, September 11, 2017, at 6 p.m. The vigil will begin with a procession stepping off from the Cedar Street intersection of the Community Path, and will conclude with a short ceremony in Davis Square.
