REMINDER: City Pairs Youth with Seniors, Persons with Disabilities for Assistance with Snow Shoveling

Sign up now for winter 2017-18.

The City of Somerville is looking for Somerville teens to pair with residents in need of shoveling assistance during upcoming snow storms. Additionally, Somerville senior citizens and residents with disabilities may contact us to be added to the list. Teens and residents in need of assistance will be paired by the City, which has also arranged a payment structure depending on the residents’ needs. However, payment is handled independently between the resident and the teen with whom they are paired.

Statement from Mayor Curtatone regarding Salvadoran TPS

Ending Salvadoran TPS with plans to deport nearly 200,000 upstanding immigrants who work hard, pay taxes, and contribute to the fiber of our communities is more than unjustified, unnecessary, and inhumane; it’s also reckless and irresponsible. On the heels of the decisions to also end TPS for Nicaraguans and Haitians, this is part of the administration’s continuum of cruelty.

Community Preservation Act Community Meetings Jan. 16 and 24

The Somerville Community Preservation Committee invites all interested community members to hear about the FY 2018 Community Preservation Act (CPA) historic resources and open space/recreational land project proposals before the Community Preservation Committee, and offer feedback on which deserve to receive funding, at two community meetings in January. The first will be held on Tuesday, January 16 and the second will be held on Wednesday, January 24. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m., and will be held in the community room at the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) at 259 Lowell St.

New Passenger Drop-Off, Pickup Zones Established in Davis Square

Zones aim to eliminate double-parking in traffic lanes and increase safety for all modes of transportation

SOMERVILLE – In an effort to increase safety in one of Somerville’s busiest areas, new street signs are up and five spaces across Davis Square are now designated as passenger drop-off and pickup only zones. The pickup and drop-off zones are open to all users including the public, taxis, and rideshare services. Parking and idling more than five minutes in the designated zones are prohibited. Somerville Seeking Residents to Serve on Central Hill Campus Working Group

Working group will review effects of changes to parking Central Hill Campus as a result of construction on the new Somerville High School

SOMERVILLE – Site preparation is underway for construction on the new Somerville High School project, which has resulted in a reduction in parking on the Central Hill Campus (which includes City Hall, Somerville High School, and the Somerville Public Library) and the need for increased staff parking the surrounding public streets. The City is seeking residents impacted by the changes in parking to serve on the Central Hill Campus Parking Working Group.

Somerville and Five Other Cities File Amicus Brief on Tax Ballot Measure

Ballot measure would give voters a say in an additional source of transportation and education funding

SOMERVILLE – The City of Somerville along with the cities of Lawrence, Lynn, Medford, New Bedford, and Northampton filed an amicus brief Monday, January 22, in support of allowing the proposed “Fair Share Amendment” to appear on the 2018 ballot. Also referred to as the “millionaire tax,” the proposed amendment to the State Constitution would add a 4 percent surtax on income over $1 million. Funding from the surtax would be slated for transportation and education.

Quarterly Public Meetings to be Held to Discuss Updates to Gradual Parking Changes on Central Hill Campus

With site preparation for construction on the new Somerville High School building project underway, gradual changes to parking options on the Central Hill Campus (which includes City Hall, Somerville High School, and the Somerville Public Library) and the surrounding public streets have begun.

All interested residents are invited to attend public quarterly meetings where City staff will provide updates about parking changes, new data collection, and strategies for impact mitigation.
