LOCATION
Join the Somerville Pedestrian & Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC) and the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee (SBAC) for a walk on Western Pearl Street between Medford Street and McGrath Highway. We'll meet at the corner of Medford Street and Pearl Street in Gilman Square.
Western Pearl Street will be repaved and the sidewalks reconstructed as part of the City's Pavement & Sidewalk Management Program. The City will take the opportunity to develop a new street design that makes Western Pearl Street safer, more accessible, more sustainable, and more comfortable for people using all modes of travel. In addition to street repaving and sidewalk reconstruction, the City aims to achieve these goals by adding accessible curb ramps to all existing crosswalks, exploring opportunities to install crossing safety improvements (e.g., raised crosswalks/intersections, curb extensions) and add new crossings, identifying locations for new trees, replacing tree stumps, considering tree bump-outs or expanding tree wells to support tree longevity, installing protected bike facilities, and implementing Clear Corners at each intersection to improve visibility for people driving as they turn or move through intersections.
PTAC will be walking along Western Pearl Street to generate community feedback that will help shape the City's designs. Staff members from the Mobility Division will be at the walk to receive this feedback and answer questions. Learn more about the project at somervillema.gov/westernpearl.
